Dr. Sarah Madole Lewis is Associate Professor and Deputy Chair of Art History at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (CUNY). Her research focuses on the funerary landscapes of the ancient Roman world with a specialization on the Eastern Mediterranean and the later Empire. She has published on sarcophagi in their local, regional and social contexts from the city of Rome to the Near East. Dr. Madole Lewis joins ISAW as an externally funded visiting scholar during a research leave from her institution to complete the manuscript for her book project, A Social History of Sarcophagi in the Roman East: Patrons and Viewers in their Regional Contexts.
