Event Exhibition Lecture: Geographical Portable Sundials
This lecture considers one type of Roman sundial represented in the exhibition that has not been sufficiently appreciated from geographical, cultural, and social perspectives. These are the miniature bronze instruments fitted with adjustable rings to accommodate the changes of latitude liable to occur during long journeys. This lecture will explore the possibility that often they were valued not so much for practical use, but rather as prestige objects.

News Item Animated Shadows on Virtual Stone: Ancient Sundials in a Gallery Setting
Among the objects on display in the previous ISAW exhibition "Time and Cosmos in Greco-Roman Antiquity" were ancient sundials, some of which were accompanied by digital animations that illustrated how such devices worked. Professor Sebastian Heath, in collaboration with Curatorial Assistant Rachel Herschman and Graduate Student Christine Roughan, recently published an article in the "Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy" on the workings of the objects themselves, the role of this digital content in the visitor’s experience, and as a museum education resource for docents.
