Etruscan Weaving Workshop: Make your Own Mini-Tapestry!
This workshop will take place in person at ISAW.
Registration is required at THIS LINK.
Come join Elizabeth Clancy, an NYU alumni and experimental archaeologist working on weaving and textiles in the ancient world, in a hands-on workshop exploring how the ancient Etruscans wove textiles and clothing. Try your hand at spinning fleece into yarn using a spindle whorl and make your own mini-tapestry inspired by ancient Etruscan designs! Afterwards you can explore the exhibition and come face to face with weaving tools used by Etruscan women to create textiles at the temple of Poggio Colla. This is a free craft focused workshop with limited spaces so please make sure to register on the link below!
Elizabeth Hope Clancy’s costume designs have been seen on Broadway, regional theater, dance, and opera companies, as well as productions in London, Dublin, and Shanghai. Favorite credits include the new Broadway musicals Passing Strange and A Christmas Story, as well as premieres of new plays by Tony Kushner, Suzan Lori Parks, Arthur Miller, and Edward Albee. She holds a B.A. in theatre from the College of William and Mary, an M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama, and an M.A. in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts, where she did her thesis on the dress of Sumerian votive sculptures. Elizabeth’s current research and publications feature experimental weaving on a warp-weighted loom. Museum credits include label writing and gallery talks for the Morgan Library & Museum (“She Who Wrote” and Claude Gillot: Satire in the Age of Reason”). Elizabeth teaches global art history at the Pratt Institute and costume design and film costume history at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
This workshop is given in conjunction with ISAW's exhibition Rethinking Etruria. This exhibition and its accompanying catalogue were made possible by generous support from the Leon Levy Foundation.
