ISAW’s Exhibitions team is in the middle of working on final preparations for the upcoming exhibition From Ancient to Modern: Archaeology and Aesthetics. The exhibit examines the process through which archaeological objects are transformed into works of art, and sometimes into popular icons, in their journey from excavation site to museum galleries. In addition to about fifty ancient Mesopotamian objects from the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the Field Museum, the Oriental Institute, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the exhibit will include archival material, and for the first time in ISAW’s exhibition history, modern and contemporary artworks that were influenced by Sumerian artifacts.

This exhibition was organized by the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and made possible by the generous support of the David Berg Foundation, Agnes Gund, the Tianaderrah Foundation, Hicham and Dina Aboutaam, and Fred and Diana Elghanayan.

From Ancient to Modern: Archaeology and Aesthetics opens on February 12, 2015 and closes June 7, 2015. We hope to see you there!
