Savage Exchange: Han Imperialism, Chinese Literary Style, and the Economic Imagination has just been published by Harvard University Press. Tamara Chin was a visiting research scholar at ISAW in 2008-09 and is now Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at Brown University. Her new book examines how the expansion of Chinese power led to a dichotomy in literary expression. On the one side, a return to traditional values, classical texts, and an agricultural economy was espoused, and on the other, a forward-looking viewpoint utilizing new forms of fiction and genre to promote a quantitative market approach. At the center she explains how the collision of worlds and markets led to debates in Chinese literature that ultimately influenced Chinese political and economic thought.
