Exhibition Lecture: Ancient Sundials

Nearly six hundred sundials are preserved from ancient Greek and Roman times.  Ancient dials range from massive stone monuments to small, portable devices for the educated traveler, and show a great variety in design testifying to the creativity of ancient dial-makers. Sundials could also carry political, philosophical or religious meanings, and they appear often in ancient art. This richly illustrated lecture will explore the significance of all these aspects of ancient sundials.

James Evans is a historian of science who specializes in ancient Greek astronomy. He is the author of The History and Practice of Ancient Astronomy and is the director of the Program in Science, Technology and Society at the University of Puget Sound.
