Writing Among the Illiterate: Modes of Text Production in Hittite Society

This lecture sketches the repeated introduction of cuneiform script in Hittite Anatolia as well as the rise of its indigenous so-called hieroglyphic writing system. The relation between the two scripts, the extent and spread of literacy,  general writing practices both linguistic and physical, and the fate of the cuneiform and the hieroglyphs will be discussed.

Admission to this lecture closes 10 minutes after the scheduled start time.
