Roger S. Bagnall (Emeritus Professor of Ancient History and Leon Levy Director Emeritus, ISAW) was recently invited to give the Fourteenth Annual Michael I. Rostovtzeff Lecture, hosted at Yale University Department of Classics and supported by a bequest from Sophie M. Rostovtzeff. The talk is titled, "The Other Caravan Cities: Transport, Capital, and Inequality in the Egyptian Oases."

This lecture will discuss the Egyptian oases, based in part on the work of the Amheida excavations as well as work by other missions in Dakhla, Kharga, and Bahariya, seeking to understand the economic and social basis and consequences of the expansion in settlement in the oases in the Roman period.
