New Book Publication by ISAW Alumnus Andrea Trameri
Andrea Trameri, ISAW Alumnus from the Class of 2020 and Researcher at the University of Würzburg (Germany), has published his new book, Kizzuwatna. History of Cilicia in the Middle and Late Bronze Age (ca. 2000-1200 bc) as part of the series Handbuch der Orientalistik (Handbook of Oriental Studies). This volume is based on his ISAW PhD dissertation, defended in May 2020.
The book is the first comprehensive history of the kingdom of Kizzuwatna, located in Cilicia (southern Anatolia), during the second millennium BCE. Kizzuwatna was initially an independent kingdom before being incorporated into the larger Hittite Empire after ca. 1400 BCE. One of the most fascinating aspects of Kizzuwatna is its significant cultural influence on the Hittite Empire, particularly through its religious and ritual traditions. Its unique socio-linguistic and cultural setting served as a bridge between Anatolia and Syria, and likely facilitated the diffusion of the Hurrian language and religious lore into Anatolia.
This book traces the history of Kizzuwatna from its origins to the fall of the Hittite Empire. Encompassing philological and archaeological evidence, it is an interdisciplinary study aimed at scholars in Hittitology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, as well as university students and general readers interested in the history of the Ancient Near East. The book presents and re-analyzes a diverse array of sources and data, offering an updated overview of topics that extend beyond political history – including historical geography, culture and religion, population dynamics and language. Some new findings and proposals further contribute to an improved understanding of the history of the Hittite kingdom and other neighboring regions in the second millennium BCE.
