Candida Moss HeadshotCongratulations to ISAW research associate Candida Moss, who was awarded the 2024 Mary-Kay Gamel Outreach Prize by the Society for Classical Studies. The Mary-Kay Gamel Prize recognizes outstanding projects or programs that enhance the accessibility and availability of topics in classical antiquity to non-Classics scholars within their residing institutions. Moss received the award from SCS to “...recognize her distinguished record of both popular and scholarly outreach."

Candida Moss is the Edward Cadbury Professor of Theology in the Department of Theology and Religion at the University of Birmingham. Her scholarship focuses on conceptualizations of the body and power in early Christianity, including topics like disability, death, martyrdom, suffering, the afterlife, and enslaved workers in the production of the New Testament. She also examines the intersection of politics and religion, primarily exploring the dissemination of religious ideas in international relations, policy making, and education. 

Moss engages within the public sphere as a papal news commentator for CBS News and as a cultural commentator and columnist for the Daily Beast. She is also a religion news commentator and writer for CNN, BBC, National Geographic, Smithsonian, Discovery Channel, and the History Channel. Additionally, she contributes regularly to publications, including the Atlantic Monthly, New York Times, LA Times, Times Supplement of Higher Education, Slate, and Politico
