Teaching, Exhibitions Practicum, & Publications Practicum

ISAW students are required to gain a minimum of two semesters of university teaching experience, the nature of which will be individually determined. Normally, teaching will be done in NYU's core curriculum or in departmental courses, but in some cases teaching experience at other institutions may be counted. It is recommended that students fulfill the teaching requirement in Years 3 and 4 of the doctoral program.

With permission of the ISAW faculty, students may substitute a twelve-month exhibitions practicum or publications practicum for one of the two required semesters of teaching.

The exhibitions practicum is a twelve-month, part-time student worker position, in which the student works on ISAW exhibitions and gains visibility into all parts of an exhibition's conception and realization including research, narrative development, design, content development, programming, fundraising, outreach, installation, and deinstallation.

The digital publications and scholarly communications practicum is a twelve-month, part-time student worker position, in which the student works on ISAW Publications and ISAW Library projects, including traditional print publications, born-digital publications, data curation, and data publication projects.
