Representing a sacrificial victim, this large statuette would have been appropriate as a votive offering. It could also reference a celebrated sculpture by the Athenian artist Myron that was dedicated on the Acropolis in the fifth century BCE and highly praised for its realism. Found in Pompeii, the statuette was acquired by a French collector, the comte de Caylus, in the eighteenth century.
