Transport Amphorae and Mediterranean Trade 400-250 BCE: A View from Cyrenaica
Kristian Göransson (Director, Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome)
Between 1994 and 2007 the Society for Libyan Studies, London excavated the ancient Greek city of Euesperides in Cyrenaica (Benghazi, Libya). The excavations yielded a substantial amount of Greek and Punic transport amphorae. Local amphora production was also attested and five different classes of Cyrenaican amphorae were identified at the site. The amphorae demonstrate that the city was an important entrepôt in Mediterranean maritime trade during the Classical and early Hellenistic periods. In this lecture the amphorae, published by the speaker, will be presented and the role of Cyrenaica in ancient maritime trade discussed.
Admission to this lecture closes 10 minutes after the scheduled start time.
