C. 145 Ewer (kalaśa)

Please note: you are reviewing a preprint version of this publication. Contents here may change significantly in future versions. Scholars with specific interests are urged to consult all cited bibliography before using our texts and translations or drawing other significant conclusions.

Support Octagonal ewer; silver; h. 10 cm × w. 7, circumference (top) 22, circumference (base) 23.

Text One line engraved around the body of a ewer written in Sanskrit.

Date 9th or 10th century CE.1

Origin Settlement of La Thọ (Điện Bàn, Quảng Nam).

The ewer was found during excavations in 1911 (BEFEO 11/3-4: 471-472; Rougier 1912: 211-212). It entered the collection of the EFEO's Museum at Hanoi under inventory number D 22, 7 as recorded in the supplement to the inventory of inscriptions in BEFEO 1915/1, p. 175. It was among the pieces moved from Hanoi to Saigon in 1954 (see C. 118 and C. 143; Phạm Hữu Mý & Vương Hải Yến 1994: 28-29). We found it at the Museum of Vietnamese History in Hồ Chí Minh City during our visits in 2009 and following years (ECIC III: 477). It bears the inventory number BTLS 1295.

Edition(s) First published in BEFEO 11/3-4: 472; whence in Rougier 1912: 212 and Majumdar 1927: 227. An edition with erroneous new readings was published in Schweyer 1999: 348. Golzio 2004: 59 reverted to the edition of Rougier. An emendation was proposed in ECIC III: 477.

There clearly is no akṣara vya.c campāpurapatīThe edition published BEFEO 11/3-4: 472 contained a typographic error campāpūrapatī. All other editions read this word correctly.cd raupyaṁ kalaśaṁraupyaḥ kalaśaḥ Schweyer. All other editions read these words correctly, with anusvāra rather than visarga.d ||The punctuation sign was ignored by Rougier and Schweyer.

Translations

English

The king of Campāpura [has given] the silver ewer (here) to this illustrious Vanāntareśvara here, for the sake of fame in the quarters of space, from his personal devotion.

French

Le roi de Campāpura [a donné] l'aiguière en argent (que voici) à cet illustre Vanāntareśvara-ci, pour la gloire dans les directions de l'espace, de par sa dévotion personnelle.

Commentary

The name Śrī Vanāntareśvara figures elsewhere only in C. 144, but cf. the word vanānthara (sic) in C. 4, face A, l. 4.

Notes

  1. The dating to the 10th or 11th century proposed by Schweyer in Baptiste & Zéphir 2005: 297 seems poorly considered. Palaeographically, this inscriptions belongs to the group of inscriptions of the so-called Indrapura dynasty.
