Support Oval dish decorated with a fish-motif; gilded silver; h. 3 cm × w. 10.5, length 16, circumference (top) 42.5.

Text Elements of one line engraved around the bottom of a dish, probably written in Old Cam.

Date 9th or 10th century CE.1

Origin Settlement of La Thọ (Điện Bàn, Quảng Nam).

The dish was found during excavations in 1911 (BEFEO 11/3-4: 471-472; Rougier 1912: 211-212). It entered the collection of the EFEO's Museum at Hanoi under inventory number D 22, 10 as recorded in the supplement to the inventory of inscriptions in BEFEO 1915/1, p. 175. It was among the pieces moved from Hanoi to Saigon in 1954 (see C. 118 and C. 145; Phạm Hữu Mý & Vương Hải Yến 1994: 28-29). We found it at the Museum of Vietnamese History in Hồ Chí Minh City during our visits in 2009 and following years (ECIC III: 476). It bears the inventory number BTLS 1313.

Edition(s) Only the single akṣara po published in BEFEO 11/3-4: 472; whence in Rougier 1912: 212, in Schweyer 1999: 348 and in Golzio 2004: 58. The fact that it is possible to read a few more akṣaras was noted in ECIC III: 477. Only those readable with certainty are presented here.

Notes

  1. It has been suggested in Schweyer 1999: 348 that the fish-motif is inspired by the art of the Tang dynasty.
