DESCRIPTION:This lecture will take place in person at ISAW. Registrati
on is required\; click through for the registration link. China’s So
ng dynasty (960–1279) began as a military government ruling a popula
tion devastated by decades of civil war following one of the most tumu
ltuous periods of Chinese history. Yet\, the Song dynasty was merely o
nly the latest in a series of short-lived dynasties that attempted to
rule China. Its leaders understood that their predecessors failed beca
use they succumbed to the instability of military rule\, and thus a ba
lance was sought in which a greatly expanded civil bureaucracy could o
ffset the monopoly of power held by military men.
