SUMMARY:Reconsidering the Rise of a Newly Discovered Iron Age Kingdom in Anatolia:
DTSTART:20261214T223000Z
DTEND:20261215T003000Z
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will take place in person at ISAW. Registrati
on is required\; click through for the registration link. Since the 20
19 discovery of a royal inscription authored by "Great King Hartapu,"
Iron Age Anatolian scholarship has been energised by the appearance of
a hitherto unknown kingdom in the Konya Plain. While the historical c
ontext of Hartapu’s inscriptions have undergone dramatic reassessmen
t in light of this new text\, little attention has been paid to the co
nditions that would have contributed to the rise of this kingdom in th
e first place. This lecture proposes several factors that likely playe
d a role in the emergence of the kingdom: cultural and economic intera
ction with the Neo-Assyrian Empire\, similar relations with Phrygia\,
emulative competition with its local peer polities and a propitious ec
ological setting at a time of significant environmental transformation
 s.
