SUMMARY:From the Ground Up:
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will take place online. Registration is requi
red\; click through for the registration link. Zoom information will b
e provided via confirmation email to registered participants. The peri
od between c.1450 and 550 BCE on Crete was one of major social\, polit
ical\, and economic change\, including the final phase – and ultimat
e collapse – of the Bronze Age palatial tradition\, and the gradual
emergence of the island’s earliest poleis or city-states. This lectu
re offers a novel perspective on these historical processes by foregro
unding the fundamental pressures and opportunities of the Cretan lands
cape\, and the agricultural foundations on which the societies of the
Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age were built.
