SUMMARY:From Ezra to Ashoka:
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will take place online. Registration is requi
red\; click through for the registration link. Zoom information will b
e provided via confirmation email to registered participants. In the m
id to late sixth century BCE\, the Achaemenid Persian kings Cyrus\, Ca
mbyses\, and Darius brought populations from the eastern Mediterranean
to Central Asia under the rule of a single empire. The fledgling Acha
emenid government faced a novel problem: administering a state of unpr
ecedented scale. In this talk\, I will argue that the Achaemenids embr
aced multilingualism as a tool for governing this diverse empire.
