SUMMARY:Exhibition Gallery Talk: Ancient Silversmithing and Modern Practice
DTSTART:20181213T230000Z
DTEND:20181214T000000Z
DESCRIPTION:The Berthouville Treasure showcases the sophisticated silv
ersmithing technologies employed by ancient artisans to create sumptuo
us silver sculpture and vessels. Found by chance in the 19th century\,
this collection has recently undergone extensive conservation and stu
dy using modern imaging technologies that revealed new information abo
ut the practice of individual artists and that of workshops in Gaul an
d Rome. Although silversmithing has evolved from how it was practiced
in antiquity\, much remains startlingly the same. Please join silversm
ith Wendy Yothers for a gallery conversation about the materials and p
rocesses used in ancient silversmithing and how Roman techniques compa
 re with present-day metalworking practices.
