SUMMARY:The First Investigations of the Antikythera Mechanism
DTSTART:20151208T230000Z
DTEND:20151209T003000Z
DESCRIPTION:During the first years following the discovery of the Anti
kythera Mechanism\, its nature\, purpose\, and date were the subject o
f intense interdisciplinary debate among archeologists\, historians of
navigation\, and classical scholars. In this lecture\, Prof. Jones wi
ll trace how a basically incorrect identification of the Mechanism cam
e to be widely accepted for half a century\, as well as explore the un
published investigations of the philologist and epigrapher Albert Rehm
in which he proposed an identification that was correct in principle
and anticipated many details revealed by recent research.
