The Smith Collection of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University, which was cataloged by renowned historian of mathematics Professor David Pingree, contains a wealth of materials for researching astronomy, mathematics, astrology, and omens in South Asia. Most of the 358 manuscripts are primarily Jyotiṣaśāstra in category. We have organized this conference to encourage scholarly discussion as a celebration of the collection. No publisher2024/03/29 11:06:50 GMT-4EventRecent Publications by the ISAW Community

This lecture will take place in person at ISAW. Registration is required; click through for the registration link. Our understanding of Roman medicine is dominated by one overshadowing figure: the prolific author and doctor Galen. His massive output, incisive intelligence, and aggressive self-promotion served to dominate the historical record very early on, with the result that other ancient voices in the field were not copied and have, accordingly, been mostly silenced. The reception following this lecture will celebrate Claire Bubb's book publication, Dissection in Classical Antiquity: A Social and Medical History (Cambridge, 2022), and other recent publications by ISAW community members. No publisher2023/08/03 15:37:35 GMT-4EventMarco Perale

ISAW Director Alexander Jones collaborated with researchers in Paris to rediscover an ancient Greek manuscript of a previously unknown work by the Alexandrian astronomer Claudius Ptolemy. The project employed multispectral imaging to uncover the text, outlining Ptolemy’s invention of the "Meteoroscope". The text is the earliest documented treatise entirely devoted to describing a scientific instrument.
