Please note: you are reviewing a preprint version of this publication. Contents here may change significantly in future versions. Scholars with specific interests are urged to consult all cited bibliography before using our texts and translations or drawing other significant conclusions.

Support Fragment of an object of an indeterminable type; sandstone; h. 17.5 cm × w. 17.5 × d. 39.

Text Three lines on one face written in Old Cam.

Date 13th century Śaka (13th-14th century CE).

Origin Settlement of Chánh Mẫm (Bình Định, Vietnam).

The fragment in known to be from Chánh Mẫm. It was first mentionned in Cœdès 1923 and recorded as a piece of the Tourane Museum's collection bearing the number 1,10. We identified the fragment in the storeroom of the Đà Nẵng Museum in 2009. The inventory number 1,20 written on the object must be a mistake.

Edition(s) First published, with French translation, in ECIC III: 450; with translation into English and Vietnamese in Đà Nẵng Catalog: 253; whence the present edition.

Commentary

The text is too fragmentary to be translated. In line 1, it seems to speak of 'undertaking a vow until very old' (dṛm̃ vrata tam̃l· mahāvṛddha). In line 3, the inscription shows the last part of a chronogram, paritaśaśadhara, which unfortunately only reveals the figure for the thousands (śaśadhara, meaning 'moon', denotes the value 1).
