C. 75 Block at Mỹ Sơn

Please note: you are reviewing a preprint version of this publication. Contents here may change significantly in future versions. Scholars with specific interests are urged to consult all cited bibliography before using our texts and translations or drawing other significant conclusions.

Support Oblong block; sandstone; we have not recorded dimensions. Parmentier 1909: 382 has recorded only two (we infer that the shorter of the two is for the height of the object), viz. h. 40 cm × w. 90.

Text Four lines on one face written in Old Cam.

Date 4 waxing Jyeṣṭha 913 Śaka (21 May 991 CE).

Origin Site of Mỹ Sơn (Quảng Nam).

The block was found at Mỹ Sơn, group B, south of B1 (see the observation by Parmentier 1909: 382 n. 1, correcting a contradictory report) before 1904. It was listed as number XI in the list of inscriptions of this site (Finot 1904b: 933; see also the table in that article). We identified the stone in the courtyard of the D group in 2009, as the one bearing local inventory number 03MSD3501 (see ECIC III: 457).

Edition(s) First published, with French translation, in Finot 1904a: 113-115; reading of the millésime questioned in Barth 1904: 117-119; reading of the month number corrected in Finot 1904b: 933; reading of the millésime corrected in Finot 1915b: 49; contents summarized by Majumdar 1927: 145; previous publications reproduced, with translation into English, in Golzio 2004: 122. Newly edited, with French translation, in ECIC III: 457, which publication is reproduced here.

1 913917 Golzio; 713 Finot. The reading 7 for the units that Golzio proposes is impossible, as inspection of the estampage shows. See our discussion in ECIC III, and especially the table on p. 486.vulān· 4 ◇ Finot (1904b); vulān 8 (?) Finot (1904a). Finot first read the month name as 8 (?). We adopt the reading that he later proposed with confidence (Finot 1904b: 933).
