Fan Zhang

Fan Zhang received her BA in History from Nankai University, China in 2011, with an emphasis on the material culture of the Han Dynasty. At ISAW, she is expanding her interest into China’s neighboring regions of Central Asia and Northeastern Asia, whose art and culture played an important role in shaping what we know as “China”. Currently, she is working on her dissertation “Cultural Encounters: Ethnic Complexity and Material Expressions in the Fifth-century Pingcheng”, which draws attention to the funerary art of the capital city of the Northern Wei Period. In her research, she hopes to explore how people who migrated from different places, both in and outside China, contributed to the cultural diversity of the capital, and how each individual articulated his or her identity through the choice of different burial practices.
