Babylonians and Elamites in the Zagros
Where Did One World End and the Other Begin?
Daniel Potts
The comparison drawn in much of the scholarly and popular literature between the Mesopotamian alluvium and the Iranian plateau, coupled with the imposing nature of the Zagros mountains, often seem to imply that the cultural and political boundaries between these two worlds was fairly firm through time. In reality, that boundary fluctuated thanks to a variety of cultural, linguistic, military and political factors. Some of the implications of this situation as it pertained to Assyria, Babylonia, the indigenous peoples of the Zagros, and Elam will be discussed in this lecture.
