Nicholas Sims-Williams, an ISAW Senior Fellow, was elected last week to membership in the American Philosophical Society (APS). Sims-Williams is Professorial Researcher of Iranian and Central Asian Studies at SOAS (University of London) and has made fundamental contributions to our knowledge of the languages, texts, and cultures of these areas. Among these is the recovery of the Bactrian language from a trove of documents found in northern Afghanistan. The APS is the oldest learned society in the United States, “philosophical” in an eighteenth-century sense and embracing the sciences, humanities, social sciences, and arts. ISAW professors Roger Bagnall and Alexander Jones are members of the APS, along with Senior Fellows John Baines, Glen Bowersock, Francesca Rochberg, and Wu Hung.
